U.S. issues new travel warning of ‘increased caution’ for China

The U.S. State Department issued a new travel warning for China on Thursday. It issues level 2 advisory urging U.S. visitors to exercise increased caution. The updated advisory warns that China can keep U.S. citizens in the country using so-called ‘exit bans.’

The department says the bans can be used to compel them to stay in the country on account of Chinese government investigations or civil disputes. China can also use ban to lure U.S. citizens back into China. U.S. citizens may be prevented from leaving China, sometimes ‘for years.’ It can also prevent travellers from accessing U.S. consular services.

The U.S. State Department’s travel warning about China, urges Americans to ‘exercise increased caution’ in the country ‘due to arbitrary enforcement of local laws as well as special restrictions on dual U.S.-Chinese nationals.’

The warning said, “In most cases, U.S. citizens only become aware of the exit ban when they attempt to depart China, and there is no method to find out how long the ban may continue. U.S. citizens under exit bans have been harassed and threatened,”

Level 1 warning, advises ‘exercise normal precautions.’ The next more serious warnings are Level 3, advising ‘Reconsider travel,’ and Level 4, that states ‘Do not travel.’
